191 miles W of Tallahassee; 354 miles W of Jacksonville
A charming blend of Old Spanish brickwork, colonial French balconies, and Victorian mansions built by British and American lumber barons, Pensacola is worthy of its motto, "City of Five Flags." However, it's much more than pretty buildings and a nice vibe. Thanks to the Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board, work has continued to progress on the revitalization of downtown, promoting the full occupancy of once-abandoned 125-year-old buildings and the emergence of downtown businesses, stores, historic theaters, restaurants, and bars.
West of town, the National Museum of Naval Aviation at the U.S. Naval Air Station celebrates the storied past of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots who trained at Pensacola. The Blue Angels are based here, and they demonstrate the high-tech present with thrilling exhibitions of precision flying.
Also on the naval station, historic Fort Barrancas looks across the bay to Perdido Key and Santa Rosa Island, which reach out like narrow pincers to form the harbor. Powdery white-sand beaches beckon sun-and-surf lovers to the Gulf shores, which include Pensacola Beach, a family-oriented resort, and most of Florida's share of Gulf Islands National Seashore, home of historic Fort Pickens.
It's easy to plan a fun Florida family trip with American Airlines flights to Pensacola. Beyond enjoying gorgeous beaches, there are many things to do in Pensacola and Pensacola Beach for an entertaining, relaxed getaway. Experience it all, from watching the waves roll ashore to discovering the history of naval aviation!
Of course, some of the most popular activities in Pensacola focus on the beach, and with good reason. Its Northwest Florida location affords plenty of picturesque stretches just made for a day of family fun. The area's Gulf Islands National Seashore is the longest protected section of seashore in the country, and ranger-led programs let kids learn about coastal ecology. You could also just spend a day by the shore in Pensacola Beach enjoying the views and collecting seashells -- the area's relaxed vibe makes it inviting to simply unwind.
Visiting the National Naval Aviation Museum is another of our favorite things to do in Pensacola. It's one of the world's largest museums dedicated to aviation and it's located on the Naval Air Station Pensacola. It features restored aircraft of all types along with artifacts charting the history of aviation for the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. Plus, it's the home of the world-famous Blue Angels! If you visit from March through November, you can see them practice, usually on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
Learn about the area's history with a stroll through the Historic Pensacola Village. It's one of the most enjoyable activities in Pensacola, because not only do you get to discover 20 historical buildings, the T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum and Seville Square, you'll also find plenty of shops, galleries and restaurants!
In addition to gorgeous beaches and relaxing seaside pastimes, there's so much to see and do in this Florida destination. American Airlines can help you fly to Pensacola so you can experience it all for yourself. Browse our Pensacola flights and start planning your getaway today!
